“Rico Baca, the owner of Urban Culture Auctions, said Glass approached him about the letters about four months ago. After reading the letters and verifying them, he decided to include them in the auction. “We think that we know what it’s like to be in prison because we watch movies and we watch TV,” Baca said. “But [through these letters] I think you really get an understanding of the mundane things, the grind on a daily basis, and what it’s truly like to be in prison.” Baca said the auction house had expected to get between $400 and $700 for the letters, but that they ended up selling for between $1,300 and $1,500.”

“Letters written behind bars by notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger have sold for as much as $1,430 at [Urban Culture Auctions] … In the letters, Bulger longingly recalled his old days at Alcatraz, complained about the gentrification of his old neighborhood and discussed how other inmates would try to push his wheelchair when he passed.”
The Washington Post

“…a hand-written letter by the late mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, an envelope and a holiday greeting card emblazoned with his 1959 Alcatraz mugshot, that Bulger mailed from federal prison in Coleman, Fla., in 2015. The items are among those being offered by the auction house for auction on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019. Bulger was found dead in a wheelchair on Oct. 30, 2018, killed by inmates within hours of his transfer to a prison in Hazelton, W.V. He was 89 … The letters, which are being auctioned Sunday, provide a glimpse into the once powerful and feared gangster’s mundane life behind bars before he was beaten to death by fellow inmates last year. Bulger wrote about the little excitements of prison life — “tonight we had an ice cream cone!” — and his treatment by other inmates … The auction house got the letters from a man who says he became friends with Bulger when the geriatric gangster was briefly held at a federal lockup in Brooklyn after being convicted in 2013 of participating in 11 murders, among other crimes.”
